Moderator Academy

Welcome to the Mod Academy! An informal but open to all space for those who want to learn more about moderation practices for online communities. This is a very general resource and doesn’t necessarily apply to any specific platform or service. It’s meant to be a general guide you can reference if you’re wanting to learn how to conduct yourself as an online moderator, or are setting up an organized moderation team for your own needs.

This space is dedicated to sharing moderation practices, fostering growth, and ensuring our communities remain free from harassment and hate. While we learn from one another, we respect each Community Leader’s (CL) unique policies and rules for their respective communities. Our goal is not to enforce a universal moderation rule set but to collaborate, exchange insights, and improve our own approaches.

Together, we strive to create welcoming spaces that exclude only those who promote intolerance and hate.

My experience as a Mod

I’ve been a moderator and admin for various online communities for over twenty years. I’m also an instructor in my professional life and enjoy teaching. So, I thought maybe put something together online for newer community leaders and moderators to use as they learn and grow within their respective communities.

Sharing is Caring

Everything in the Mod Academy (EXCEPT OUR LOGOS) is free to copy and use in your own communities. Bottom line is we’re all here to learn from each other. If you have ideas to share on ways to improve moderation practices that can be applied to a diverse collection of communities, please share! I might be able to incorporate it into our training texts.

Academy News and Info

All educational texts in the academy are routinely updated as I have time and get information shared with me. Being a moderator is kinda like being a teacher, as long as you’re a lifelong student, you’ll be a superior teacher. So, I do my best to learn from others and integrate that information into what I share with others.

Unfortunately I don’t have sufficient time between my various commitments to host a fully interactive forum for others to post to and ask questions. Since there are so many different communities with different types of moderators functioning within them, I strongly encourage all of you to look into what moderation support groups you have within your specific communities and amongst the platforms you’re operating on.
